Tourism for Sustainable Development

Sustainable tourism does not have to be complicated: above all, it is about maximizing the positive impacts and minimizing the negative impacts of the travel activities. Most importantly, sustainable tourism places local communities and their environment at the center of its concerns.
We are convinced that tourism has the capacity and the responsibility to stand as a reference and a model for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
In particular, we focus on SDG8 - Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all, SDG10 - Reduce inequality within and among countries, SDG11- Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG12-Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

Our story
Millennium Destinations (MD) was first launched in 2010 by Catherine GERMIER-HAMEL as a blog aimed at promoting sustainable tourism initiatives and destinations around the world, particularly in developing countries.
The main objective was to give more exposure to less-known tourism destinations and business so that they can actually attract visitors and get access to markets, while sharing practical solutions and insights on the contribution of tourism to global sustainable development and the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals.
In 2014, Millennium Destinations became an international expert network engaged in the development and promotion of tourism destinations, businesses and products / experiences.
Early 2016, Millennium Destinations was incorporated as a Seoul-based boutique agency offering positive business consulting and solutions of sustainable development, management and marketing to its clients and partners, mainly in the field of travel, tourism, hospitality and leisure.
Millennium Destinations has been advocating Community-Based Tourism (CBT) as a desirable solution for the sustainable development and empowerment of local communities across the world. Within this framework, we have designed Herost, an impact platform and network dedicated to sustainable, community-based tourism. In 2020, Herost has become an online travel guide, index and toolkit promoting sustainable travel experiences powered by local heroes.
